Session 1: Narrative/Genre

(October 6 – 29)

A fun-sized deep dive on narrative filmmaking culminating in a short horror film made for CATV Halloween-o-thon. Hands on workshops will focus on aspects of film production including screenwriting, lighting, directing, image capture, editing and effects. Each week we will work on our own productions and watch scenes from movies for inspiration.

Session 2: Documentary Subjects

(November 3 – December 3)*

*no workshops on the week of Thanksgiving

A team focused experiment in storytelling. Learning to conduct interviews, shoot footage in the field, and edit image and sound, we will all become capable of telling each other stories with compassion.

Hi! My name is Everest Crawford, I am the Program Director of the Freedom & Unity Young Filmmakers Contest and will be the main instructor for this film lab. I am a (young) filmmaker myself, and constantly learning. I am currently directing my second fully cast and scripted short film. I am a post-grad intern in the Film & Media Studies Department at Dartmouth College, where I operate the equipment checkout room and offer technical workshops to students. I am in love with the technical and the poetic aspects of filmmaking equally. I feel that filmmaking is a collaborative art form through which we can share our most personal stories in a safe and inspiring way. I have made both narrative and documentary films and am inspired by the full range of genre and style, past and present.
